Our Recent Work

Tricky New Windows in York

We recently had an enquiry from a homeowner in York, who wanted us to take a look at some of the windows at the front of his property. The upstairs bay window had seven windows; the downstairs one had seven large bottom sashes and seven smaller top sashes. But these were unusual windows… they had central pivot openings. Our customer requested that these be changed to more conventional openers and that we install double glazing.

After our craftsmen had tailor-made the windows, with their precisely machined moulds and architraves, we sent one of our highly-skilled installers, Slaw, to the property. It was a tough job, especially when it came to getting the converted opening sashes in to replace the old central pivots. But Slaw successfully completed the work within the expected timescale. The customer was hugely impressed by Slaw’s hard work and tidiness. Apparently, he was ‘a delight to have in the house’ – but we expect nothing less!

We then got even better feedback. One of our customer’s neighbours contacted us and asked us to carry out some work on their windows too – but only if Slaw was on hand to install them!

Check back later to see our progress. We’ll be putting up some photos of the whole project soon!

An Introduction to Sash Windows

Traditional box sliding sash windows are a familiar sight of property across the North West. Their place in our heritage dates back to the end of the 17th century. Their shape and size vary and was generally dictated to by developments in industry. Wander through the streets of Manchester and you will quickly recognise the many period buildings that show a variety of sash window designs.

A sash window is made of three main components, the box and two sashes – the sashes being the opening, or sliding sections, of course. You can find out all about them on our sash windows page or if you are looking for specific information on repair or upgrades please follow these links:

  • Sash window restoration – our joinery experts can restore your existing sash windows to their former glory.
  • Sash window double glazing – our industry leading double glazing process will preserve its look and maximise its future value.
  • Sash window replacement – where full replacement is necessary, we manufacture new sash windows to exactly the openings in your property.

A note about joineryworkshop.com

Joineryworkshop.com Limited went into liquidation in April 2018.

What was left of its website, systems of work and stock were purchased from the receiver by a former employee so that he and a few others could continue to work providing new and refurbished sash and casement windows. The new operation has been totally revamped to start afresh and strives to maintain the highest build and installation standards.

Because there was no new money or spare cash available, what wasn’t brought into the new company were the old snags and issues that may have been caused by work done by the old company – that is what FENSA membership is there to cover. In other words, if you had work completed before April 2018, we are very sorry but there is nothing that the new company can do to help, other than suggest that you approach FENSA. The new company doesn’t have access to old records and documents so is not able to become involved.

So if you see some bad reviews online, these may be by customers who feel the old company has let them down. We are pretty sure that we have also been targeted maliciously by ex-employees who were disgruntled about what happened. Not all of the reviews you see are by any means accurate.
